The Substance, 2024
we need to say ‘no’ again.
some thoughts in no particular order:
- why are the makers of the substance offscreen, criticising demi moore
- THEY ARE NOT ONE PERSON, what is she getting out of this
- world building beggars belief—it’s not the 80s anymore, how is anyone doing jane fonda style aerobics for breakfast tv that famous / ‘the network’ / similar to assayas’ non-fiction in having been overtaken by reality for the things it criticises / HOW MUCH DOES SHE PAY / maybe there is more horror in her being 50 and having no hobbies or interests besides doing jane fonda aerobic exercises on morning tv → she’s won an oscar, has a star on the walk of fame, but it seems to mean nothing at all
- looks mostly good, but god, one can have too many visual (and sonic!) references / what the actual fuck is up with her apartment. it makes no sense in physical space and is also r/malelivingspace
- third act really overstayed its welcome
- in general doesn’t trust its audience to pick up on anything (same as megalopolis → is this a 2024 problem?)
- liked: visceral, nauseating horror of eating
- hated: the pornographic shots of moore and qualley
